Unique photos: Jason X without a mask. Character history Jason Voorhees the killer

Scott Stoddard, the man who created Jason Voorhees's makeup and mask for the remake of the film "". Jason's mask is perhaps the most recognizable image of the legendary Hollywood serial killer of all time, but it also needs constant care and supervision. Not only is Stoddard responsible for the mask, that's just a little bit of what he does. For the new film, directed by Stan Winston, Stoddart created a new Jason Voorhees, who became scarier, dirtier and more sinister. The resource IESB.com interviewed Stoddard right on the set of the new film.

About what the new mask looks like...

I like the masks from parts three and four. They looked classic, so from the very beginning I got a copy of one of them, studied it properly, and made a cast of it, and then completely remade the cast because I didn't want to use an image that already existed, even though it was cool. I wanted to make the mask more traditional, but at the same time retain its distinctive features, especially with regard to the markings on the forehead and cheeks, perhaps aging them a little.

Was there a temptation to create a completely new look for Jason?

There was, but at the same time there was Paul Halderman's makeup in Part 2, which I really liked, and I wanted to combine it a little with the makeup from Part 4. In general, I combined these two makeups so that with their help Jason still looked like a man and not a monster, well, you understand what I mean. He is a person with a perverted psyche, so I needed to act in that spirit. I didn't want to make him completely bald... I didn't want him to look all overgrown with hair and disheveled, as if he had come down from the mountains... there is definitely both a human and non-human nature in him.

Will we see him without a mask?

We filmed it and will probably show it. We pushed this idea by saying, “yes, we should really show his face.” We spent a lot of time creating this face, thinking about how it should look in the frame, and the producers were faced with the dilemma all this time: “Do we want to show his face?”, “Or do we not want to?” They've done it before - those are the rules of the game. Fans want to know what he looks like, even if they only see him for a split second.

What are the disadvantages of makeup?

In principle, there wasn’t much that got in the way, I mean, I worked with Derek Mears (editor’s note), and he’s used to makeup and knows what we’ll have to face. The makeup consisted of several components, so it did not cause any particular inconvenience. We knew we were going to be shooting in Texas, in the heat, and we knew what we were dealing with, so we made it as easy as possible to apply the makeup, maintain it during filming, and remove the makeup at the end. We made a lot of copies of the “face”, “neck”, and parts of the “torso”, so when something got torn or worn out, we simply replaced it. This also applies to hoods, of which there were three or four.

What kind of materials were used?

Mostly foam latex: we had this cool guy who got a lot of stuff for Rick Baker.

How long does it take to apply makeup?

The full makeup, including the face, takes about three and a half hours to apply, which is cool... when it's just a hood and a piece of torso and a hockey mask, like you saw today, it takes about an hour and a half.

Like other unforgettable movie maniacs from the glorious 80s, Jason Voorhees had a hard time in the next decade, when audience preferences changed dramatically, leaving old attractive franchises without attention. The transfer of the rights to Friday the 13th from Paramaunt pictures to New Line Cinema did not lead to anything special, and the long-awaited sequel, entitled Jason Goes to Hell, frankly performed poorly at the box office, marking the end of the glorious history of slasher films of the past, whose time has naturally come to an end. Even the return of Sean S. Cunningham, the author of the original “Friday the 13th,” who acted as a producer, did not help the picture, and therefore plans for a possible continuation of Jason Voorhees’ bloody campaign had to be put aside. But over the years of the franchise's existence at the top of the genre, a dense ring of passionate fans has formed around it, gathering for meetings, parading the streets in hockey masks and fake machetes in their hands. And they couldn’t just come to terms with the fact that “Crystal Lake” remained just a story, and Jason himself fell victim to the most insidious enemy - audience indifference. Years of writing all sorts of demanding petitions, piercing pleas, and even raising money to support the filming of the sequel eventually convinced New Line Cinema executives that the next installment of “Friday the 13th” still needed to be given a chance. Sean S. Cunningham returned to work on the film, entitled “Jason X,” who had a couple of interesting ideas for the anniversary part of the franchise, and in the director’s chair of the film was a traditionally unknown craftsman, whose name is James Isaac. At first, not intending to roll the long-awaited return of “Friday the 13th” into a frankly ugly tent of category “B”, the creators were able to achieve very significant funding in the amount of $11 million, which turned out to be an astronomical amount for the story of Jason Voorhees. The very concept of the film has undergone serious developments, turning into a semblance of a fantastic comedy with elements of the good old slasher film. However, no matter how clever Cunnigham and Isaac were, “Jason X” interested only fans of the franchise, for the most part leaving the rest of the audience indifferent. Thus, the anniversary part of Jason’s adventures turned into a kind of get-together for a select few who knew each victim and the way in which she was killed on the shores of Crystal Lake.

So, the plot of the film begins in the present day, when the American military finally managed to capture Jason Voorhees (Kane Hodder) and send him to a strictly guarded base for research. Testing various methods of killing on a maniac, scientists led by Dr. Wimmer (David Cronenberg) were well aware of how unique and valuable the object was in their laboratory, but they did not calculate that Jason had his immortality for a reason. He is called upon to kill everyone who is near him, which means that sooner or later an escape must take place with all the ensuing circumstances. And as one would expect, Jason gets out of the restraining shackles, starting the path of senseless and merciless revenge, in which many people have traditionally died. However, through the efforts of Rowan LaFontaine (Lexa Doig), who simply had no choice, Jason was still able to be restrained. Having frozen the maniac in a cryogenic chamber, the girl froze along with him, remaining for many centuries in an indestructible state and without the ability to independently escape from her unexpected imprisonment. None of the authorities decided to open the research center, or no one except the people inside simply knew about it, and therefore Jason and Rowan had to wait for the real post-apocalypse in order for them to be found and brought back to life.

The main action of the film takes place in 2455, when the ship of Professor Lowe (Jonathan Potts) arrives on our old Earth, who decided to show his young charges the former home of humanity and what inexorable industrialization has done to it. Having accidentally found an ancient bunker in the middle of a desert area, the guys discover in it the same Jason and Rowan who are a treasure trove of invaluable information for society in the distant future. Having delivered the still icy bodies to the ship, the researchers decide that their mission was a success and set off back to Earth-2, simultaneously deciding to bring their findings back to life, which ultimately becomes a mistake, the consequences of which only cause trembling. Jason Voorhees, who has come to his senses again, instantly discovers a suitable weapon and goes on a wild walk through the labyrinths of the spaceship in order to fully thank his saviors and quickly send them to a meeting with higher powers. And if emergency measures are not taken, the shuttle will definitely not reach Earth-2, although if you look at Voorhees’ biography and evaluate his bloodlust, this will be far from the worst event that can still happen.

By sending the leading villain of the franchise into deep space, on the one hand, the creators came up with a rather unexpected and playful move that allows them to go beyond the monotonous wandering of Voorhees around Crystal Lake, but on the other hand, “Jason X” looks not like a professionally made film, but like a half-amateur craft. filmed with terrible technical performance and actors who are instantly forgotten as soon as they leave the frame. It’s not really clear what exactly went into the production budget, which was quite substantial by the standards of “Friday the 13th,” but the film looks excessively monotonous, its decorations resemble a symbiosis of cardboard and foil. And computer special effects completely cause a fit of hysterics. And this despite the fact that James Isaac’s film was released at a time when even modest independent studios could already afford to draw almost entire worlds for much less money. There's almost nothing left in Jason X that connects the narrative to the franchise's legacy. And if you had taken Voorhees out of it, no one would have remembered this part of the long-running epic.

One gets the impression that the film's script was written by Tod Farmer and Victor Miller with the expectation that it would be a short film based on it, but not a creation that reaches a limit of an hour and a half and has such a rich cultural past. For a long time, nothing interesting happens on the screen at all, and only when the creators begin to understand that the audience is no longer interested in watching the scenery and faceless clown heroes who make their eyes bleed, Jason Voorhees himself enters the arena and somehow enlivens the deathly boring spectacle with his favorite antics.

In the end, I want to say that “Jason X” is not as full-fledged a continuation of “Friday the 13th” as it is a free creativity based on the franchise by Sean Cunningham. Don't look for meaning, horror or suspense here, because this is pure Crystal Lake irony, made by people who poorly understand the basics of cinema. But if you have a desire to watch this chapter, then for the sake of fun it is quite possible to do so.

Performers of the role of Jason Voorhees

Like another famous maniac, Michael Myers, Jason behind the mask has been played by many people.

  1. Friday the 13th- Jason appears in several seconds of flashbacks and the hallucinogenic ending of the film. He was played by a child at the time, and now an impressive cult figure and rock musician, Ari Lehman. Thanks to Tom Savini's makeup and Lehman's charisma, the ending became one of the most terrifying in cinema history.
  2. Friday the 13th part 2- It was in this film that Jason became a serial killer. He was played here by as many as 4 people - Warrington Gillett (at the end without a mask), Steve Dash (Dashkevich, a professional stuntman, all scenes in a mask), Jerry Wallace (shadows and some close-ups) and the only woman who played Jason - Helen Lutter, costume designer for the film (Jason's legs at the very beginning of the film).
  3. Friday the 13th part 3- In this film, the role was played by trapeze artist Richard Brooker, and Jason acquired his symbol - a hockey mask.
  4. Friday the 13th part 4- In the fourth film, the maniac was played by veteran stuntman Ted White. However, he demanded that his name be removed from the credits because he believed that the role would negatively affect his reputation.
  5. Friday the 13th part 5- In this film, as in the second, Jason was played by several actors. The most interesting thing in this situation is that Jason was not in the film as such. He appeared only in hallucinations, and his imitator acted, played by Dick Wayand (paramedic Roy Burns). However, in the hallucination scene of the main character, Jason was played by the famous stuntman Tom Morga. He was also Wayand's backup in most of the murders. Jason's fall onto the spikes was performed by veteran stuntman John Hawk.
  6. Friday the 13th part 6- Initially, Dan Bradley was supposed to play the reanimated Jason, but the producers and director did not like him, and he was replaced by C.J. Graham. Although we do see Bradley in the paintball scene.
  7. Friday the 13th, part 7, 8, 9 And Jason X- The first person to play Jason several times was the iconic stuntman and horror film actor Kane Hodder. In the eighth part, Jason for some time again turned into a child, played by Timothy Barr Mirkovich.
  8. Friday the 13th part 11("Freddy vs. Jason") - Director Ronny Yu decided to find a replacement for Hodder due to the fact that Hodder seemed short to him. The new Jason was stuntman Ken Kirzinger, who played an uncredited cook in the eighth part. Jason also appeared as a child in the form of child actor Terence Stump.
  9. Friday the 13th part 12(a remake of the original film) - In the 2009 film directed by Marcus Nispel, Jason is played by famous horror actor Derek Mears, and Jason as a child is played by Caleb Gass.

Friday the 13th or the whole truth about Jason Voorhees

Friday the 13th or the whole truth about Jason Voorhees

Do you know this killer hero from very famous horror films? His name is Jason. Jason Voorhees was born on June 13, 1946. His mother, Pamela Sue Voorhees, became pregnant while still a very young girl (she was 15) by Elias Voorhees. That same year (1945) they got married (it is possible that they did this after Pamela became pregnant). Jason was born with a severe tumor (hydrocephalus), as a result of which he suffered severe physical deformity. After some time, Pamela and Elias separated; Pamela kept her husband's last name. Elias himself, after some time, met another woman and (around 1954) Jason’s half-sister, Diana Voorhees, was born.

Camp Crystal Lake

Due to her deformity, Pamela did not allow Jason to go to school and she seemed to be the only person he knew. In 1957 (at the age of 11), Jason went to Camp Crystal Lake, where his mother worked as a cook. The camp, founded in 1935, was named after the lake of the same name, which is adjacent to it. Jason suffered a lot of ridicule from his peers; no one wanted to communicate or play with him. And so one night he ran to the lake to make an independent swim and prove to everyone that he could swim no worse than others. There was an argument on the shore of the lake (between the teenagers and Jason), Jason tried to run away from them, but slipped and fell into the water from a small pier. His body was not found, and Pamela Voorhees decided to avenge her son's death.

Reopening Camp Crystal Lake

A year later, in 1958, someone killed two counselors who decided to have fun in the evening in the attic of the camp warehouse. Then, over the course of several years, a series of misfortunes occurred. First there was a massive arson, after which “someone” poisoned all the drinking water. Camp Crystal Lake has closed.

In 1979, entrepreneur Steve Christie began preparing the camp to reopen. Pamela Vorhees, who was a friend of his family, was against this, but Steve remained adamant. Hired counselors and other personnel began arriving at Crystal Lake. On June 13th, Pamela Vorhis took turns killing Steve Christy, the counselors, and everyone else. The only survivor was Alice Hardy, who ended up cutting off Pamela's head with a machete. When the police arrived, the girl imagined that the drowned Jason, covered in mud, jumped out of the lake and carried her to the bottom. But, as it turned out, it was not a hallucination. Now Jason, having risen from the dead, decided to avenge his mother's death.

Two months later, Alice, having somehow recovered, settled near Crystal Lake. At the same time, Jason, unknown how, acquired the severed head of his mother and, again, unknown how, learned Alice's address. He showed up at her house and scared her to death by hiding her mother's head in her refrigerator. He then killed Alice and took her body away; Alice was considered missing, and the area around Crystal Lake was declared dead. The camp itself received the nickname "Death Camp".

For the next five years, Jason walked freely around this area. Still embarrassed by his ugliness, he wears a bag on his head with one slit in his left eye. In the forest, he built himself a small hut, and in it something like an altar, on which he placed his mother’s head. In the summer of 1982, Jason attacked teenage girl Chris. She lost consciousness from horror and only came to her senses at home in her bed. The parents remained silent.

In 1984, Paul Holt became the first person to return to the territory of Crystal Lake after five years of abandonment. On July 10, he opened a training camp there to prepare counselors. Jason was quick to take advantage of this and killed nine people there the next day. Fleeing from him, Ginny Field came across his own hut and there, posing as the late Pamela Vorhees, together with Paul inflicted a serious wound on Jason (she plunged a machete into his shoulder).

Having recovered from his wound, Jason killed two store workers on July 12, and a few hours later attacked a group of twelve people, including Chris's girlfriend, who had been attacked by Jason two years earlier. Jason took a hockey mask from one of the victims, which he will wear for the rest of the time. Ultimately, Chris temporarily eliminated Jason by stabbing him in the forehead with an axe.

The next day, July 13, Jason was sent to the city morgue, where he came to life and killed two doctors. Returning back to the lake, he killed a tourist, and massacred a whole group of vacationers on the lake. In the end, 12-year-old Tommy Jarvis plunged Jason's machete into Jason's temple with a deep blow; Thinking that Jason was definitely dead this time, local authorities decided not to cremate the body, but simply bury him in the Eternal Rest Cemetery.

Three years later, in the summer of 1987, Tommy Jarvis, who received very severe psychological trauma from a collision with Jason, ended up in an institution for the mentally ill called Pinehurst. On the day of his arrival, one of the patients there killed another. After which a series of Jason-style murders occurred - however, as it turned out, this was only an imitation. One of the local hospital medics avenged his son's death by using the guise of Jason, but Tommy and nurse Pam ended up killing him.

In May 1988, Tommy, having escaped from another hospital, dug up Jason's body to personally cremate him. When he digs it up, he has a hysterical fit and sticks a metal stake pulled out of the cemetery fence into Jason. A thunderstorm immediately began, and at some point lightning struck the stake. As a result, an electric current passed through Jason's body, under the influence of which he came to life. Now Jason has become the living dead and cannot be killed or injured so easily. He went to the old place - to the Crystal Lake camp, which by that time had been rediscovered and renamed the Green Forest. Meanwhile, Tom learned that Jason could be killed if they tried to bury him where he died at the very beginning - in Crystal Lake. After a series of murders, Tommy managed to drown Jason in the lake by placing a chain with a stone around his neck. After which the camp was closed again and its old name was returned to it.

On August 13, 1993, Jason is accidentally freed by the telekinetic girl Tina Shepard, and he commits another series of bloody murders, after which he is again sent to the bottom of the lake. In May 1994, he awakens, and this turns into the death of two students from a local school. The next day, he turns a field trip to Manhattan for local schoolchildren into a bloodbath; many die in the shipwreck. After “working” in New York, he is killed by a release of toxins, but he revives and returns to the lake, where FBI squads are waiting for him. The FBI operation is successful, and the murdered Jason is sent to the morgue, where he once again rebels and, under a different “guise,” goes to kill. A couple of days later, his relative and her friend send Vorhees to hell.

In September 2002, Freddy Krueger frees Jason from hellish bondage and sends him to the city of Springwood, Ohio. There, Vorhees kills many people, and then Kruger himself. He takes his severed head with him as a trophy.

Death sentence

2008-2009. Vorhis was caught and sentenced to death, but not a single method of killing yielded results.

In 2010, Jason is transported to a laboratory in another city. During the transportation, the maniac is freed, kills a handful of people and, once in a cryogenic chamber, is frozen.

On August 13, 2455, on an extinct Earth, scientists found this chamber and, not knowing who Jason was, transferred him to their ship. After hibernation, he returns to his old ways. When a ship crashes, it is thrown into space, and upon entering the planet's atmosphere it burns up. Only his mask reaches the surface and falls into the lake, so perhaps
