First acquaintance with the Samsung Galaxy S6 Active and comparison with the Galaxy S6. Samsung Galaxy S6 Active - Specifications The main camera of a mobile device is usually located on the back of the body and is used for photo and video shooting

The main character of our material today is Samsung Galaxy S6 Active, which we will consider as a not the most secure alternative to the iPhone 6. Not long ago I talked with one domestic iOS developer who was completely bewildered by a fairly simple fact - not all iPad users prefer the iPhone. The fact is that the iPad is the only tablet computer on the market, because Android-based solutions cannot be compared with it. However, there are more than enough truly interesting substitutes for the iPhone today. The telephone version of Google's operating system has made a huge qualitative leap, so devices based on it today can become an excellent alternative to the iPhone 6 and will create many useful use cases in addition to the iPad. Well, today we’ll take a look at not the most secure solution – the Samsung Galaxy S6 Active.

Recently, a protected version of the Samsung Galaxy S6 smartphone was presented - Samsung Galaxy S6 Active. It, by and large, repeats the key features of the flagship solution from the popular Korean manufacturer, but stands out with a number of additional features that will create truly useful use cases as an alternative to the iPhone 6 in addition to the iPad. Let's take a closer look at the device and note all its key strengths and weaknesses.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Active – screen

Needless to say, the touch screen is the main characteristic of a modern mobile device today? I think another similar demagoguery can be missed, because we have all known for a long time that the display these days is not only a means for displaying user information, but also the only solution for entering it. That is why it should be of maximum, but without frills, quality and have a minimum response time to touch. What did they put in the Samsung Galaxy S6 Active?

(Screen of Samsung Galaxy S6 Active)

Did you know that the human eye cannot distinguish individual pixels on the screen even at their density of 300 PPI. This golden rule was once clearly outlined by Steve Jobs at the presentation of the iPhone 4 with a Retina display. Other manufacturers followed Apple for quite a long time, but at one point they found the technical opportunity to surpass this indicator, so mobile devices with monstrous PPI values appeared on the market. For what? Marketing, nothing more. Our today's hero - Samsung Galaxy S6 Active - is equipped with a 5.1-inch screen with a resolution of 2560x1440 pixels. The pixel density on it reaches the level of 577 PPI, which does not provide any fundamental advantages, but puts a significant burden on the device components. The displays are produced using Super AMOLED technology and have excellent contrast.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Active – filling

The screen resolution of the Samsung Galaxy S6 Active is truly impressive, so it needs no less interesting filling in order for all its charms to, well, be cool. Similar to its unprotected flagship brothers, the heart of the smartphone is a fast and energy-efficient eight-core Exynos 7420 processor made using a 14-nanometer technical process. 4 cores operate at a frequency of 1.5 GHz, and four more at 2.1 GHz. It is complemented by the Mali T760 graphics chip, and together they give the device truly impressive performance, which is unlikely to be matched by any other solution.

(Samsung Galaxy S6 Active stuffing)

For adequate operation of applications in the background, the Samsung Galaxy S6 Active has 3 GB of RAM, and 32 GB of physical space for data storage. Despite the rumors floating around this device, it did not have a slot for memory cards, so it will not be possible to expand the space for user information even if you want to. The highlight of the device is the 3500 mAh battery, which, taking into account the gentle operation of the processor, will give it the ability to operate autonomously for a couple of days.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Active – cameras

The cameras built into the Samsung Galaxy S6 Active are far ahead of most competitive solutions in all possible characteristics. The main one has a resolution of 16 megapixels and an aperture ratio of 1.9. The second is a wide-angle lens and a 5 megapixel sensor. Just as a rare bird will fly to the middle of the Dnieper, so a rare device will be able to photograph better than our today’s hero.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Active – body

Samsung Galaxy S6 Active is positioned as a secure version of the Samsung Galaxy S6. Its components are packaged in a case that is certified to the IP68 standard, which makes it possible to talk about the gadget’s good moisture resistance - it can easily withstand immersion of 1.5 meters for half an hour.

(Samsung Galaxy S6 Active case)

The device body can be white, gray or black. It looks quite aggressive and will definitely appeal to lovers of an active lifestyle.

What's with the prices? Nothing is known yet about the device's availability for free sale, but with a two-year operator contract it will cost only a couple of hundred dollars.

Samsung Galaxy S6 Active is a very interesting smartphone based on Android and is definitely suitable for really active use in conditions that are not the most, but still extreme for consumer electronics. It is worth noting that today there are a huge number of more “armor-piercing” phones on the market, but none of them can boast of a similar set of modern flagship characteristics. In the Samsung Galaxy S6 Active, did the Koreans manage to find that fine line between protection and functionality? It may very well be.

Be sure to leave your opinions about the Samsung Galaxy S6 Active in the comments, we’ll be happy to discuss!

From a South Korean company Samsung There is a tradition every year in June to present a protected version of its new flagship. This is the third year in a row. The Samsung Galaxy S6 was no exception, having received the additional definition of Active a couple of weeks ago.

The American company AT&T produces protected versions. Metal is replaced by durable plastic, the phone is shockproof and has the ability to float. As a result, it becomes thicker, wider and taller, but with a larger battery and loses the fingerprint sensor. All other characteristics remain the same. Let's take a closer look at it.

Key Features:

– the new 3500 mAh battery is approximately 40% larger than the old 2550 mAh battery found in the Samsung Galaxy S6, and there is also a Qi wireless charger and fast charging capabilities;

– certified MIL-STD 810G plastic provides protection from salt (sea water), dust, humidity, rain, vibration, solar radiation, shock resistance and inertness to temperature changes;

– IP68 certification allows the smartphone to be immersed in water up to several meters for 30 minutes, it also provides protection from dust;

– 5.1-inch Super AMOLED display with QHD resolution (1440 × 2560 pixels) and a pixel density of 577ppi is protected by Gorilla Glass 4;

– the eight-core Exynos 7420 processor contains a 64-bit architecture and a clock speed of four processors at 2.1 GHz (Cortex-A57) and four more at 1.5 GHz (Cortex-A53);

– graphics from Mali-T760 MP8;

– 3 GB of RAM;

– Android OS 5.0.2 Lollipop with proprietary TouchWiz firmware;

– 16 MP main camera, with the ability to record video in 4K, LED flash, optical image stabilization;

– 5-megapixel front camera, with the ability to record video in QHD, HDR;

– 32 GB of internal memory 2.0 UFS;

– active noise reduction system using a special microphone;

– customizable quick access buttons;

– communications LTE Cat.6, Wi-Fi / B / G / N, GPS, GLONASS, Beidou, NFC, IR port, Bluetooth, 4.1, ANT +;

– heart rate sensor, barometer, SpO2;

– a slight price premium compared to the original model.

Main disadvantages:

– only the option with 32 GB of internal memory is available;

– no slot for MicroSD card;

– the battery is not user replaceable;

– no stereo speakers;

– no fingerprint sensor;

– released only through the AT&T network (at least for now);

– not as beautiful compared to the original.

As you can see above, the Samsung Galaxy S6 Action has not lost any of its technical characteristics, but has increased its armor and become much more tolerant of physical impacts. Unfortunately, the phone cannot yet be purchased in any store, an option with more memory is not available, the fingerprint detector has been removed, but the robust navigation buttons have become better.

Packaging and design

Like its predecessor, the Samsung Galaxy S6 Action comes in a white and orange box with AT&T branding. Inside it you will find the handset, charger, MicroUSB cable and a quick start guide. This year, Samsung and AT&T decided not to include headphones in the box.

If you add a portion of plastic to the Samsung Galaxy S6, you get the Samsung Galaxy S6 Action. This didn’t make him any more beautiful, but he didn’t lose his refined taste either. The company is not going to win beauty contests with it, but created this version for active travel enthusiasts, athletes and people working in harsh conditions. Therefore, the build quality is excellent.

The flagship also received new camouflage colors: “winter”, “city” and “black camouflage”. Interesting color combination for a polycarbonate case. No additional covers or protective cases are required. They are de facto built into the body.

The dimensions of the smartphone are as follows: 146.8 × 73.4 × 8.6 mm. The thickness of the original model is 6.8 mm. It weighs 150 grams. The thickness of the original is 138 grams. It's almost impossible to drop one by accident. The smartphone has a clear grip on the palm even with a glove. The physical buttons are tight and don't get pressed accidentally. You need to put effort into each one.

Control

Above the display we find a speaker, a pair of sensors and a selfie camera. Three navigation buttons are located below the display.

The volume and power/lock keys are on the left. The nano SIM card slot is located on the right.

At the top of the smartphone we see a 3.5mm audio jack, a secondary microphone and an IR port that allows you to remotely control various household appliances using your smartphone.

On the bottom you will find a MicroUSB port and a hole for the primary microphone.

The back has a main video camera with LED flash, a heart rate monitor, and a speaker. The Samsung and AT&T logos are also located there. The back cover is not removable.

Final words

The Samsung Galaxy S6 Action offers high-quality specifications and good durability in one device. A large 3500 mAh battery allows it to work for up to two days without recharging, which is very good in hard-to-reach places where the benefits of civilization are far away.

The company equipped it with the latest cameras and the most powerful processor. It makes it easy and simple to shoot stunning UHD videos and photos and work with all applications without a trace of lag. Moreover, taking a photo is easy, just double-quickly click on the screen. But the phone's memory won't be long enough to record 4K clips. In fact, only 23 GB out of 32 are allocated for video storage. Hopefully, the company will add options with 64 or 128 GB.

The built-in wireless charger also adds to the phone's appeal. More importantly, this time you don't have to worry about the rubber flap covering the MicroUSB connector after you've charged the device. The slot is already protected from water and dust. The price of the device is $700, which is comparable to the price tag for the Samsung Galaxy S6 variant with 64 GB internal memory.

Now we have the opportunity to compare the new rugged flagship Samsung Galaxy S6 Active with its simpler version Galaxy S6. Interestingly, both smartphones are quite similar to each other in the most important features: cameras, software, displays. The whole difference lies in the word “Active”. So far, the original S6 is sold almost all over the world, but the S6 Active is available from AT&T.

The Samsung Galaxy S6 has a 5.1-inch Super AMOLED screen with a resolution of 2560 x 1440 pixels - the same can be said about the Galaxy S6 Active. Exactly the same display is installed in two different smartphones.

The camera on the back of the Galaxy S6 has a resolution of 16 megapixels, there is an LED flash, an f/1.9 aperture, a focal length of 1/2.6”, with the ability to shoot at 4k resolution at 30 fps, and at 1080p at 60 fps. The Galaxy S6 Active has all the same specifications. That is, in practice, smartphones should perform the same.

By the way, the front cameras of smartphones are 5-megapixel wide-angle.

Both flagships received the same processors – 64-bit eight-core Exynos 7420.

The difference is already noted in the choice of models divided by internal memory capacity. The Galaxy S6 is available in 32, 64 and 128 GB variants, but the Galaxy S6 Active comes in one variant – with 32 GB of internal memory.

And there is a very big difference in battery capacity. The original Galaxy S6 has a 2550 mAh battery, but the Galaxy S6 Active boasts a 3500 mAh battery. This is definitely enough for long work. Of course, this affected the size of the smartphone - it gained a little thickness.

The Galaxy S6 has a glass back, but the Galaxy S6 Active has a back panel made of durable reinforced plastic. At the same time, the Galaxy S6 has a metal frame, but you still have to buy a separate protective case for it.

The Galaxy S6 Active doesn't need any of that. It is different from almost all other smartphones - it is not afraid of water, dust, shock, vibration, humidity, and high temperature. The smartphone is certified to IP68 and MIL-STD-810 standards, which means it will take a lot of force to damage the device. It is simply impossible to break the Galaxy S6 Active.

And to protect the smartphone as much as possible, Samsung used physical buttons instead of capacitive ones. Many people may like this option, if only because it is convenient to use them in winter.

However, the Galaxy S6 Active also has an additional blue button that can be programmed for specific functions. The main action is double clicking, which gives access to special functions of the Activity Zone. That is, you get quick access to LED flashlight, stopwatch, compass, S Health app, Milk Music, barometer, weather app.

You can specify the functionality of the button yourself - the Active Key option. Note that here you can program short and long presses, so that you can launch various applications with a certain signal. Using this button you can launch any application installed on your smartphone. The Active Key button is active even when the phone's screen is locked.
